Effects of Hypertension Education Programs on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice in Hypertension Patients

Abstract
This study was intended to determine the effects of hypertension education programs on knowledge, attitude and practice of the patients with hypertension patients and to suggest an effective intervention in the management of hypertension. Of ninety-six hypertension patients who were treated in a community health center in C city, 50 received the hypertension education program (the education group), the remaining 46 subjects served as the control group. The education group was further divided into the intensive education group who underwent a secondary exercise program that lasted for three months starting 3 months after education and the exercise education group. All subjects¡¯ blood pressure, blood sugar levels, salinity, BMI, percent body fat and WHR were also measured. Based on the result repeated measure ANOVA test, the number of subjects who took action in an effort to lower their blood pressure increased in the intensive education group and the education group immediately after education, when compared with baseline measures (p=0.02 for both). No differences were found in knowledge (p<0.001), attitude (p=0.05), exercise (p=0.003), diastolic blood pressure (p=0.02) and BMI (p=0.014) between group. But there were significant improvement in these variables between pre and post-education. Changes in systolic blood pressure were not significant over the whole period, but the difference in SBP was significant between pre and post-education (p=0.021). A results of the study suggested that a short-term education program had the lower effects to help let the subjects change their lifestyle, which is considered an important factor in the management for hypertension.
